PERU HOLDS OVER 5000 YEARS OF TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE OF MACA
Maca - the most sacred root of the people of Junin began its journey into modern cultivation with the pre-Incan tribes of the central Andes. The Huanca, Chunca and Pumpush tribes were the earliest known farmers to cultivate the roots high in the Andean mountains around 4000-5000m above sea-level. Legend says that the gods led a group of warriors to an isolated cave during a storm where they took refuge in the region of San Blas one day. This cave contained a grave site of a fallen king who was buried with his possessions consisting of nothing more than just a simple box containing the seeds of maca. So sacred was this plant to them that it was valued more than all the gold in the Andes. The seeds were planted and the cultivation of maca began as a 'gift from the gods', where it now has become ingrained into the culture of the region. We hope to continue sharing this ancestral heritage and giving honour, reverence and cultural protection to the amazing communities that continue to work with maca in Peru.
